A Brief report on 44th National Pharmacy Week celebrations organized by Royal College of  Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Berhampur in collaboration with the IPA, Orissa State Branch

 

 

                        The 44th National Pharmacy Week (NPW-2005) with the focal theme “Know your pharmacist - Fight Malaria” was celebrated by Royal College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Berhampur in collaboration with the IPA Orissa State Branch and the APTI Orissa Branch in a befitting way from 20th to 26th November 2005.

 

            The week was inaugurated by Sri Chandra Sekhar Sahu, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Berhampur by flagging off the silent rally in the morning of 20th November.  The students, staff members and IPA members took part in the rally which covered Berhampur Town.  A number of placards were displayed and pamphlets distributed during the rally to create awareness among the public on the important role played by the pharmacist in the health care system and as to how to fight malaria.

 

            An inaugural function was held in the college auditorium in the after noon on 20.11.2005 which was presided over by Prof. P.N. Murthy, Principal of the college and President of the IPA, Orissa State Branch.  He explained the importance of observing the NPW and on selection of the theme ‘Know your pharmacist - Fight Malaria’.  Sri Jagannath Sahoo and Sri Susanta Kumar Panda, Asst. Professors and President and Vice President, APTI, Orissa State Branch also spoke on the occasion besides many other staff members and students.

 

A blood donation camp was organized in the college campus on 22.11.2005 in which 61 participants including the principal, faculty and students donated blood.  A state level debate competition was held on 23.11.2005 for D. Pharm., B. Pharm. and M. Pharm. groups separately in which students from several Pharmacy Colleges all over the state participated.  A seminar on Communal Harmony was organized on 24.11.2005 in which several participants including Prof. P.N. Murthy, Sri Bhagaban Padhi, Chartered Accountant, Sri T. Vasudev Rao, Drugs Inspector spoke.

 

            The valedictory function was organized on 25.11.2005 in the college auditorium.  Sri Manik, Lecture invited the dignitaries on to the dais.  Sri A. Dev and Sri B. Sarkar, Lecturers introduced the Guests and Prof. P.N. Murthy, Principal presided over the meeting.  Chief Guest Dr. P. K. Dash, C.D.M.O., Ganjam inaugurated the function by lighting the butter lamp.  The president in his opening remarks explained the important role played by the pharmacist in patient counseling, rational use of drugs and adverse drug reaction monitoring and urged all the pharmacists to update their knowledge and skills.  Sri Arjun Patra, Lecturer gave a brief report on the NPW activities conducted in the college in collaboration with the IPA, Orissa State Branch & APTI, Orissa State Branch.  Guest of Honour Dr. E. Jayanti Rao, Ophthalmologist spoke on the importance of profession of pharmacy in the present health care system.   Sri Jagannath Sahoo, President, A.P.T.I., Orissa State Branch, Sri. Srinivas Patro, Sr. lecturer, R.I.P.S. and Sri Niranjan Patro, Lecturer, C.P.S., Mohuda also spoke on the theme of the week. 

 

            Chief Guest Dr. Radha Madhav Tripathy, M.K.C.G. Medical College, Berhampur gave a detailed talk on Malaria, its causes, diagnosis, treatment, prevention etc. and highlighted the role of pharmacists in fighting the disease.  Chief guest Dr. P. K. Das appreciated the role played by various pharmacy organizations in creating awareness in fighting malaria and explained the pharmacists’ role in the system.  Prof. P.N. Murthy in his closing remarks explained the dangers of drug resistance and  suggested judicious use of anti malarial drugs taking into account of the anti-malarial drug resistance pattern. He emphasized the role of community pharmacists in educating the public on prevention of malaria.  Prizes were distributed to winners of various competitions including games and sports conducted on the occasion.  Sri Devdeep Roy, Sri S. K. Sahoo and Sri Tarun Mondal, Lecturers coordinated the prize distribution event.  Sri S. K. Panda, Asst. Professor proposed a vote of thanks.

 

             

A student session of the NPW was organized on 26.11.2005.  The meeting was presided over by Mr. S.K. Guru; Mr. D. Bharat Kumar was the Chief Guest and Mr. K. Sridhar was the Chief Speaker. and Mr. Dillip Kumar Patro wes the Guest of Honour. Miss. L. Kalyani, and Mr. Japa Dixit Mahapatro were the speakers .  All the participants spoke on the theme and the important role played by  pharmacy profession in the health care system.  Mr. Arjun Patra, Lecture coordinated the student session.
